Breed Information - The Ridgeback is not for everyone

Before you decide on any type of breed.... do your homework! Not all dogs suit all people and vice versa. With all the information on the web sift through and study the history and origin of the breed and the purpose for which it was bred. After you have decided which breed is right for you then start all over researching "breeders" You should make a list of questions you would like to ask and expect questions back. A good breeder selects who they sell their pups to and looks to find the best possible homes before they produce a litter.

True or False

(True) Ridgebacks are prey driven, one minute they could be curled up in a ball and the next thing you know they are off chasing after a rabbit ! Never have your pet unleashed in an area that is not contained, especially near a busy street.

(False) Ridgebacks don't like to swim. This is a false statement and depends on the individual dog.

(False) Ridgebacks don't retrieve. This is a tough one. There are some. For example my dog will only retrieve a stick if he is swimming. Go Figure !

(True) Ridgebacks are good with kids, but keep in mind dogs should never be left alone with children.

(True) Ridgebacks need exercise, they prefer acreage but a small lot with a sunny deck and a very active owner will suffice. Along with frequent routine walks, ridgebacks do need to run. Mountainbiking, jogging, and rollerblading (if your dog is obediant !) are all great activities.

(True) Ridgebacks are expensive to buy ...Yes ! and the original purchase does not outweigh the expense these dogs incur through dog ownership. People don't realize owning a pet is not only an huge responsibility it is also financially draining. We go through about a 40 lb bag of dogfood a month....roughly $50 dollars a month, then there is unexpected trips to the vet, vaccinations, toys, treats, crates, obediance classes etc. You begin to realize that the price you paid for the dog was only the beginning. These are important factors to consider before you buy a dog.
